Mr Lane and the Pocket Rockets

Over the past term and three quarters I have had the pleasure of working with five very talented young ladies from Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus on the First Lego League competition. This group of students have never attempted this competition before and have made it through the Regional Final where they won the Best Project Award and the State Final where they won “The Sharing the Fun Award and working with five of our feeder primary schools”. This is a fantastic result and I am very proud of them. The students will attend the National Final in Sydney at Macquarie University on the 8th and 9th of December 2018.

I would also like to acknowledge the work of our wonderful mentors who have helped guide our students through this challenge. Anne-Marie Lane, Project Manager at Nova Systems and Erin Madden, Systems Engineer at Nova Systems. Annie and Erin spent time with the students via video conference and provided them with great insight into Engineering practice. The students have taken on board all the information supplied to them and utilised it in their project. They were also excited to be mentored by two very talented female Engineers and they now firmly believe they can be and do anything in life.

Their project was based on space junk and the growing problem with it. They designed a project about retrieving the space junk and recycling it. They spent many hours researching different ideas of a space vehicle that could be used to complete this mission and current research on what is happening with space junk.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the National Final due to other commitments, but I will be keeping in contact from afar.

I wish these fantastic young ladies all the best with their upcoming competition and as I have told them on many occasions. I know they will succeed!

Cheers
